As an emerging artist, Illusion has given me an invaluable supportive environment to grow as an artist, and to experiment with ways to interactively involve the public. The energy of each Illusion has been an explosion of creativity and community charged with life that I will always remember. I love seeing so many people from various ages and walks of life being comfortable together, creating, enjoying, and being in a positive space together. Illusion, with its white walls that come to life with our intentions and interactions, is a beautiful metaphor for each day and moment that we live.

ilusión y tal como aparece se desvanece.

“First, were those anxieties. Is my white outfit white enough? Does my white hair count as white? What can I contribute as a participating artist? Is that good enough? Will it be any good at all?

I arrive at the Centro-a commotion of ladders, tape, scissors, and rolls of white paper, when, suddenly the work stops and the room looks as quiet as falling snow. The entire space white: melting and losing its boundaries with white floors and walls.

The public is arriving! The fifty artists huddle in the communal dressing room absorbing last minute instructions. We re-enter the blinding whiteness, illumination, and promise of change through unimagined interaction. Jorge Molina with his magic chants, feathers, and smoke infuses us with ceremonial focus.

People enter in barefoot silence, dressed in startling black against the whiteness. Everything comes as a surprise. I paste poems, hang poems, write poems, urge and coax poems out of other people. We post the poem on the white wall. Sometimes we stop, entrapped in a song, twirling in a dance, painting or gazing in amazement at the transformation of images, space, and energy. The black and white hours dizzily passing, until I see only traces of white. Most people are gone. We roll and recycle the paper. The room becomes the familiar gallery again. Was it only a dream, a memory, or an illusion?”

About the curator and creator of Illusion show

Adrián Arias is a visual artist and poet who created the Illusion show in 2003 to gather San Francisco community artists in a collective party of live art to show the public the secret and special moment of creation. He believes that the creative process is the greatest strength of the human spirit, where we receive the essence of daily existence. Adrián has participated in shows around the world and has organized events of similar scale in Canada and Peru. He has received important prizes in poetry and visual arts in France, Japan, Peru and Spain.

The Event
Illusion is a one-night event, developing over the course of 4 hours, where more than 50 artists engage in making, with other artists, and the public to share the space of the Mission Cultural Center’s two galleries. All surfaces are wrapped in white paper: walls, floors & columns. Artists come dressed in white for the making and the public dressed completely in BLACK, for the viewing, what takes place over the course of an evening is the optical illusion of vibration.
Illusion is a moment of energetic, public happening.

This ILLUSION show is the last opportunity to discover self among others and to create in a shared space for all ages, children and adults.

The Theme
This year’s theme of “DREAMS” is open to interpretation and is offered as a design parameter to those artists interested in commenting upon and creating around this theme. The idea can be simple and transformed into its own making, with the DREAM color, words, sound, movement…

Illusion is a one-night event, developing over the course of 4 hours, where 50 artists engage in making, with other artists, and the public to share the space of the Mission Cultural Center’s two galleries. All surfaces are wrapped in white paper: walls, floors, columns. Artists come dressed in white for the making and the public dressed completely in ONE FULL COLOR, for the viewing, what takes place over the course of an evening is the optical illusion of vibration.
Illusion is a moment of energetic, public happening. This is an opportunity to discover self among others and to create in a shared space for all ages, children and adults.

Here one project...

Among them Radio Free Clear Light
along with Visual Artist Carlos Cartagena embarked an a quest to cut to the heart of Illusion and create a world within the world of La Fiesta: a model of motion through time, a Music Box.

Kyron, aka Juan Carlos Mendizabal, drenched the small haven that would serve as a life size music box in a sonic wave of tones and drones that spilled out into the larger Gallery space.

Performance Artists: Etanna Sack and Lydia Harari, costumed as zealous bacchants, moved throughout the box and into the Gallery beyond dancing and inviting fellow artists and patrons into their lair.

Carlos Cartagena set to work visually transforming the once empty port of sound and motion with an empty frame, some silver foil paper, a discarded dresser and a collection of tiny porcelain seagulls.

Swiss muralist Mona Caron drawing 5 panels in 5 hours in response and honoring the swiss muralist Gottardo Piazzoni (1872-1945), both artists with all most 100 years of difference arrive to San Francisco where they became mural artists and both was from the small mountain village: Intragna (population 800), in the Piazzoni room

ILLUSION 5 – FUERA DEL BARRIO – BEYOND OUR BLOCK, two afternoon events, invites artists from all mediums to come and engage in collective creation. The theatre of process is shared with the public, from children to adults, who is presented the opportunity to leave the realm of the audience.

The site of Illusion is totally wrapped in white paper readdressing all surfaces as an opportunity for new making without coordinates.

Illusion is a moment of energetic, public happening. Artists arrive with suitcase-in-hand, dressed in white, ready for an exchange of experience, interpretation, and entertainment between themselves and public.

Every ILLUSION SHOW have a theme, offered as a design parameter to the invited artists and word play ensues. The event is ludic, live-action, a call to community, spectacle, an improvised play, an invitation to start from nothing, engage with all the art forms, and hold the experience as artifact.

In the past four years we have utilized more than 120 artists, in different disciplines including: live painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, video, photography, music, poetry, dance, puppet making, body painting and performance.

The artists work for 4 hours. At the closing, they will have developed a very special space full of the energy of creation in the once pristine white spaces.

ILLUSION show was created in the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in 2002 thanks to the support and vision of board members and MCCLA staff member who support the idea of the visual artist and poet Adrian Arias in create a new space of interaction and the unique moment of creation of the artists working individually and in group. Adrian was helped for artists and volunteers of the community.

PIAZZONI ROOM
special painting performance by Mona Caron
- statement -
Expanding the theme of being “outside one’s ’hood” SF muralist Mona Caron will be creating an homage and response to Gottardo Piazzoni’s murals, showcased in this room.
The serene, expansive California landscapes depicted by Piazzoni, characterized by their strong horizontality and sparse beauty, stand in stark contrast to the extreme verticality of the topography in Piazzoni’s native land, the Centovalli region in the Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland.
SF artist and muralist Mona Caron was born and spent the first two decades of her life in the very same small mountain village (Intragna, population ~800) where Piazzoni was born. Both artists, roughly 80 years apart, emigrated to San Francisco where they became mural artists.
Mona Caron will be creating 5 paintings depicting the memory of home that she shares with Piazzoni.
All the landscapes will be specifically of Intragna, showing the canyons surrounding the steep hill that the village sits on, and the 7 bridges leading to the village.
